A Legacy of Resilience and Unity

Nestled in northwest-central Tallahassee, Griffin Heights is one of the city’s most historic, tight-knit, and resilient African American neighborhoods. Emerging in the early 20th century, the community experienced a vibrant post-WWII boom from the 1930s through the 1950s. It became a self-sustaining haven for Black educators, civil servants, small business owners and working-class families.        

The very fabric of Griffin Heights honors Black excellence. Its rolling streets bear the names of legendary figures like Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, and Joe Louis. For generations, local landmarks, neighborhood churches, and bedrock institutions like Griffin Middle School have served as the heartbeat of this proud community.

In recent decades, Griffin Heights has faced modern structural challenges. The rapid expansion of neighboring universities brought shifting demographics, student housing development, and rising living costs. Despite these gentrification pressures and systemic underinvestment, the spirit of the neighborhood remains unbroken.

Through powerful grassroots advocacy and the resident-led Neighborhood First Plan, Griffin Heights continues to fight for its heritage. The community’s historic revitalization efforts, affordable housing stabilization, and deep civic pride recently earned it the prestigious title of Tallahassee’s Neighborhood of the Year

The Griffin Heights Community (GHC) Scholarship was born out of a profound respect for this neighborhood’s rich history and unstoppable spirit. At the 1932 Projects Foundation, we believe that the best way to honor a community’s legacy is to invest directly in its future: its youth.

This scholarship bridges financial gaps for incoming Florida A&M University (FAMU) freshmen who reside in the historic 32304 zip code. By providing a minimum $1,000.00 scholarship per academic year for tuition, books, and living expenses, we aim to alleviate the burden of student debt for local families.

More than just financial aid, the GHC Scholarship requires a Give-Back Pledge. Recipients complete community service directly within Griffin Heights, ensuring that as our scholars rise, they pull their neighborhood up with them. We are not just funding degrees—we are fueling a cycle of local mentorship, civic pride, and generational success.
